Maya 2012

The Mundo Maya countries, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador, are preparing to enjoy a tourism surge expected in the next few months generated by the end of the current Maya 2012 Long Count Calendar on December 21.
That day marks the end of the Maya calendar cycle “Baktún”, which began 5,125 years ago, and and the start another cycle according to experts who say that the count of the time of the pre-Columban civilization was not linear but circular, the cycles beginning at a point in which one ends and the other starts anew. The appointed date has unleashed apocalyptic predictions, including the theory that it will be the end of the world, but the only thing that countries of the Maya world are preparing for is to receive a tidal wave of tourists.

“We are going to meet expectations (…), it is a guaranteed success, the arrival of tourists from Europe, South America, United States, Canada and other parts of the world,” the Minister of tourism of El Salvador and President pro tempore of the Maya world Organization (WMO), José Napoleón Duarte is quoted as saying in an article in Guatemala’s Prensa Libre newspaper this week.
“The impact is already being felt throughout social media networks; the Maya world is now the most important focus for tourists coming to Central America and Mexico,” noted Mr. Duarte.
Duarte says that in the main archaeological areas of the five countries of the Maya world hotel occupancy ‘is fully booked’ for December and that, in the case of El Salvador, “there are airlines that are already completely booked up for the San Salvador” in that month.
The official has estimated that tourism in the region will increase by more than 10 per cent by the end of the Maya cycle.
Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador are expecting five million tourists and Mexico around 10 million, to the Maya World regions alone, excluding other tourist niche markets, according to Duarte.
According to statistics from the Secretariat for Central American Tourism Integration, in 2011 the number of visitors to the region grew 4.5 percent to eight million tourists, with a 9 percent increase in foreign currency earnings totaling some $8.2 billion.
Some of the more prominent archaeological sites offered by the Mundo Maya include Palenque, Tulum, Comalcalco, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Cobá (Mexico), Xunantunich (Belize), the Jewel of Cerén (El Salvador), Tikal (Guatemala) and Copan (Honduras).
Duarte said that each country of the Mayan world is organizing its own activities on the occasion of the “Baktun”, in some cases starting in November, but that will be no main regional activity.

But Duarte says says that on the night of December 20 he will link up with his counterparts in the Maya world via satellite television from the ruins of Tazumal (El Salvador) and this event will be broadcast from Canada to Colombia.
“That will be the event where we will meet to explain what are we doing on the occasion and continue to raise awareness of the Maya culture and the Baktun, he stated.
The countries of the Maya world will hold concerts, gastronomic festivals, religious ceremonies, ball games, archaeological visits, and conferences on science and tourism investments, among other activities promoting appreciation for and understanding of Maya Culture.
El Salvador, which will start their celebrations in the first week of December, will symbolically build four Mayan pyramids in the port of La Libertad (Pacific), that will combine four elements: wood, earth, fire (with laser lights) and water (the sea).
Nothing as spectacular is planned for Belize. Announcements to date are for tourism-oriented events such as camp-outs and Maya ceremony re-enactments to be held at the Xunantunich, Caracol and Cahal Pech Maya Temples in western Belize.

A food lover’s guide to Belize City

By Megan Wood On June 13, 2011 ·

Classic boil up. Photo: Bernt Rostad, feature photo: abacusengine.

Belize City is home to several distinct cultures, each with their own recipes and methods of cooking. Add proximity to the sea for fresh seafood and a climate perfect for growing coffee, cacao, and habenero peppers, and you have this food lover’s dream.

[Editor's Note: Megan Wood is the first writer-in-residence to participate in the Road Warrior program, a partnership between MatadorU and the Belize Tourism Board. Megan is spending the spring in Belize, documenting traditions of the country's diverse cultural groups. Each week, she reports on her experiences for Matador, her personal blog, and for other outlets.]

HERE IS MY GUIDE to a day of culinary delights in Belize City.

Michael Finnegan Market
Corn tortillas being made at Michael Finnegan Market.

I start the day early, at 5:30AM, downing some Belizean coffee at my hotel before setting off to the Michael Finnegan open air market on Hickattee Street. Belizeans bring fresh fish, meat, and produce from all over the country to sell. I buy a ripe mango and watch Mennonites sell watermelon, next to Creoles hawking chestnuts, alongside Mayans making corn tortillas.

Corner of West Canal and Hickattee Street

Dario’s Meat Pies

Before the sun gets much higher I walk over to Dario’s Meat Pies, a culinary tradition in Belize City.

Mmmm. Dario’s meat pies.

Mr. Dario sells his well-spiced pastries, stuffed with chicken or beef, from his shop on Hyde’s Lane, and carts on street corners around the city. The meat pies are perfect for breakfast or a snack anytime of day. I add a few splashes of Marie Sharp’s hot sauce, which comes in 7 different heats; I like the hottest, called Beware.

Walking up Albert Street toward the House of Culture, I am tempted by street vendors selling roasted corn on the cob served with limes, but I opt for a cold, fresh watermelon juice instead.

33 Hyde’s Lane

Dit’s Restaurant

Around lunchtime I make my way to Dit’s Restaurant on King Street where the slogan is “It’s nice to be important, but more important to be nice.” Ms. Nadine is still using her grandfather’s Creole recipes for Stew Chicken and Boil-Up, which is a combination of fish, cassava, plantains, and yam boiled together with coconut milk.

Ms. Nadine’s jam roll.

Ms. Nadine finally clears up the difference between beans and rice and rice and beans for me. Rice and beans are cooked together, while beans and rice are cooked separately. I order a salbute, which is a soft corn tortilla with cabbage, chicken, and pico de gallo, and Belize’s favorite beer, a Belikin Stout.

For dessert, Dit’s has a variety of homemade treats: coconut tarts, pound cake, and lemon pie. I order the most famous option, a jam roll — which is like a pop-tart that I actually want to eat, complete with homemade strawberry jam — for only fifty cents.

50 King Street

Goss Chocolate and Marie Sharp’s

Mid-afternoon snacks could include Goss Chocolate, which is made with 100% organic cacao grown in Belize, I really like the dark bar. Or try a bag of Marie Sharp’s cassava chips
.

Bird’s Isle Restaurant
Bird’s Isle. Photo: Bernt Rostad

For dinner, I take a quick cab ride to Bird’s Isle Restaurant on the southern coast of the town. One of the prettiest restaurants in Belize City, Bird’s Isle is a big, wooden deck built right on the water with a traditional thatch roof.

The restaurant has a large tourist-friendly menu including chicken wings and conch fritters, but I like the daily rotating specials. Tonight is beef soup, which is served with white coconut rice and plantains on the side. If I linger too long over key lime pie for dessert, I might run into Karaoke, so I take a cab back to my hotel for some digestive tea and sleep.

Birding Hotspots in Belize

Birding Hotspots in Belize

Ornate Hawk-eagleCockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary – While visitors rarely see a jaguar, the many ecosystems of Cockscomb support a rich and varied bird fauna – forest species, pine woodland and savanna species, species restricted to riverine areas, and birds associated with higher elevations. Cockscomb also provides important protection for game species, such as the Great Curassow and Crested Guan, as well as other birds of conservation concern such as the Ornate Hawk-eagle, Keel-billed Motmot, and seasonally the Scarlet Macaw.

JabirusCrooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary – In 1998, this protected area was declared Belize’s first Ramsar site based on the wetland’s international significance especially for many migratory and non-migratory wetland bird species. Large numbers of wading birds flock into the lagoons during Belize’s dry season (February through May) when food is hard to find in other places. Explore the lagoon and its tributaries, searching for Jabiru and Wood Storks, Bare-throated Tiger and Boat-billed Herons, Sungrebe, Black-collared Hawk, Snail Kite, and American Pygmy Kingfisher. Crooked Tree offers great birding opportunities on land as well. Look for Yucatan endemics among the pine and hardwood forest habitats and the endangered Yellow-headed Parrot of the pine savannah.

Wood StorksAguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary - These wetlands in the Toledo District attract a number of very visible birds forming the principal attraction for visitors to the Sanctuary. Aguacaliente protects important breeding colonies for the Wood Stork and Boat-billed Heron. There are a few birds in Toledo District that can’t be found elsewhere in the Belize: Western Slaty-Antshrike, Paltry Tyrannulet, Gray-breasted Crake, Band-tailed Barbthroat, and with luck, Violet-crowned Woodnymph and Bare-crowned Antbird. Most of these birds can be found within a half-hour drive from Punta Gorda.

Rusty Sparrow © 2008 BirdsPlus Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve - Raptors cruise the valleys of the Pine Ridge and it is the most likely place in Belize to see the rare Orange-breasted Falcon. Reserve specialties include Rufous-capped Warbler, Grace’s Warbler, Red Crossbill, Pine Siskin, Stygian Owl, Eastern Bluebird, Rusty Sparrow, Hepatic Tanager, and Yellow-backed Oriole.

White-crowned PigeonAmbergis Caye and Caye Caulker – Of all the habitats in Belize, the littoral forest on the cayes is the most endangered due to coastal development. Caye littoral forests benefit the Black Catbird and White-crowned Pigeon, both are listed as Near-Threatened species. Mangrove habitats attract birds such as the Rufous-necked Wood-rail. During migration the cayes are an excellent place to see migrants such as warblers, thrushes, tanagers, and orioles.

Ocellated TurkeyCaracol Archaeological Reserve - The main attraction is the Keel-billed Motmot, which nests in the area. Belize is one of the last outposts where this globally vulnerable species is relatively common. Other notable birds seen at Caracol include Ocellated Turkey, Crested Guan, and Great Curassow. While admiring the largest Maya site in Belize you may also see colorful toucans and trogons.

Red-footed BoobiesHalf Moon Caye Natural Monument – Declared a crown reserve bird sanctuary in 1928, the Red-footed Booby colony of Half Moon Caye is the oldest site for wildlife protection in Belize. Half Moon Caye’s population, an estimated 4,000 birds, is made up almost entirely of white morphs with black on the trailing edge of the wings. When migration is on it’s phenomenal at Half Moon Caye; many new species for the country have been recorded here. The latest addition from Half Moon Caye was the White-throated Sparrow in 2007.

Scarlet MacawRed Bank Village – The unmistakable Scarlet Macaw flocks to the small Maya Village of Red Bank in South Stann Creek seasonally. As many as 100 birds gather near the village, primarily from January to March, to feed on the sweet, ripe fruits of the annato trees. The Red Bank Scarlet Macaw Conservation Group was formed with members from the village. Mr. Geronimo Sho is the chairman of the group and is the person to contact before visiting the site.

Things To Do in Stann Creek Belize

It is easy just to relax at Macaroni Hill View Hotel, taking in the citrus scents, the beautiful scenery and the sounds of the birdsong. But there are also plenty of interesting things to discover in this beautiful area of Belize which are guaranteed to add to your experience and keep you occupied for a good while.

There are many more natural treasures in the Stann Creek district of Belize including waterfalls, caves and a wildlife park dedicated to the jaguar. On top of that there is the Mayan and Garifuna culture to explore by virtue of dedicated museums to each group as well Maya ruins and the constant beat of the tribal Garifuna drums in the area’s principal town, Dangriga.

There is much more to do in the area around Macaroni Hill View Hotel. You can explore nearby caves, go bird watching or take a culinary tour of the famous Marie Sharp hot sauce factory or the local orange processing plant. We can also arrange for you to participate in cookery demonstrations in the house of a local family where you can not only get a taste of rural Belizean life but learn how to make anything from our famous ‘Johnny cakes’ to more exotic dishes such as Iguana cooked in coconut milk when it is in season.

The hotel is also conveniently-placed to visit adjacent towns such as the pretty and tranquil fishing village of Hopkins just half and hour a way, or an hour further down the road to the popular coastal town of Placencia. Both towns provide the opportunity to not only enjoy a taste of Belize’s coast but to visit the neighbouring cayes for some of the world’s best snorkeling, diving and fishing.

We hope that you are encouraged to spend some time with us at Macaroni Hill View Hotel. Please don’t hesitate to contact us. See what our guests have written about us on Trip Advisor.
